The World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council has reappointed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General for a second term. The process began on October 8, 2024, and was led by Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, the Chair of the General Council. With no other nominations submitted by the November 8 deadline, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was the only candidate considered. The appointment followed the WTO's established procedures for appointing Directors-General.
During a special General Council meeting held on November 28-29, 2024, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala presented her vision for the WTO's future. After her presentation and a question-and-answer session with members, her reappointment was endorsed by consensus.
Ambassador Ølberg acknowledged her accomplishments: "The General Council commends Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for her outstanding leadership during her first term. Amid significant global economic challenges, she strengthened the WTO’s ability to support its members and set a forward-looking agenda for the organization."
He added: "As we look ahead, the Council fully supports Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s commitment to ensuring that the WTO remains responsive, inclusive, and results-driven."
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala first took office as Director-General on March 1, 2021, becoming both the first woman and first African to lead the WTO. Her initial term will end on August 31, 2025.
