The World Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the sole candidate for the position of Director-General. This announcement follows her expression of willingness to serve a second four-year term, which she communicated to the Chair on September 16.
The formal process for appointing the next Director-General began on October 8, allowing WTO members until November 8 to submit nominations. With no other candidates put forward, Okonjo-Iweala stands unopposed.
Ambassador Ølberg's communication regarding this matter is accessible to WTO members. The Chair of the General Council is expected to announce the subsequent steps in this process shortly. The appointment procedure adheres to the WTO’s established "Procedures for the Appointment of Directors-General" (WT/L/509).
Okonjo-Iweala's current tenure is set to conclude on August 31, 2025.
