New research from ANZ reveals that 78% of LGBTIQ+ Australians have experienced homophobic or transphobic language in the past year. Additionally, more than two-thirds reported being called derogatory names. In contrast, only 41% of heterosexual Australians see this language as a significant issue.

ANZ has launched the #LoveSpeech campaign to highlight the impact of such language on the LGBTIQ+ community. The campaign includes a short film showing these effects and encourages more supportive communication.

Key findings indicate that 74% of the LGBTIQ+ community view hurtful language as a major issue in Australia today. Furthermore, 26% experienced such language from friends or family members for the first time. Online abuse affects 40% of LGBTIQ+ millennials and 43% under age 24.

Michelle Jablko, ANZ Executive Sponsor of the Pride Network and Chief Finance Officer, stated: “Diversity, inclusion and respect is a part of who we are at ANZ. We hope this campaign helps people understand the impact of hurtful language, and promotes more #LoveSpeech online and offline so everyone can embrace their authentic selves.”

Albert Kruger, CEO of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, said: “Hurtful language can have a negative impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ people, and that’s why ANZ has launched this powerful and insightful #LoveSpeech campaign, spreading beautiful messages of support for our community."

ANZ has also developed resources like a digital Love Speech handbook and The Hurt Blocker Google Chrome extension to help counteract harmful language online.

The research was conducted by YouGov Research with over 2,000 Australian participants in early 2020.
