European Council President Charles Michel addressed a gathering of WTO ambassadors, Swiss authorities, and representatives from various sectors, highlighting the critical need for cooperation in a world facing numerous challenges. Speaking at an event opened by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Michel emphasized the importance of trust, trade, and transformation to make multilateralism effective.
Michel painted a picture of a world on edge due to ongoing conflicts and climate change impacts. He noted that these issues push global dynamics away from law-based systems toward force-based interactions. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence adds another layer of complexity with its potential risks.
He pointed to the European Union as an example where cooperation leads to reduced dependency and beneficial partnerships. "We want to build bridges, not barriers," Michel stated, advocating for more dialogue and less polarization among nations.
Michel called for a multipolar world where countries can choose their paths while respecting common rules. He stressed the need for smart compromises and collective problem-solving intelligence.
For multilateralism to work effectively, Michel argued that building trust is essential. He said: “People must believe in each other when they make agreements.” Additionally, he emphasized the role of trade in achieving common goals and called for transforming global institutions to meet 21st-century needs.
Commending DG Okonjo-Iweala's efforts in restoring trust within the WTO, Michel highlighted the organization's reform as a strategic priority for the EU. A well-functioning WTO is vital for fair global trade based on shared rules.
Michel also underscored necessary reforms like improving the dispute settlement mechanism agreed upon at MC12 in June 2022. These reforms should ensure inclusivity across developed and developing nations alike.
DG Okonjo-Iweala expressed appreciation for Michel's insights amid current challenges: “Trade is a force for social inclusion, economic development...and peace.” She praised his commitment to using trade as an integrative tool benefiting all people.
The event concluded with a discussion between Michel and DG Okonjo-Iweala about international trade's future amid uncertainties moderated by Professor Muhammadou Kah.
The lecture was part of the WTO's Presidential Lecture Series offering insights into multilateral cooperation globally.
