Uzbekistan's efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) were discussed at a high-level event in Washington D.C., with Deputy Director-General (DDG) Hill highlighting the country's progress. The accession process has gained momentum due to President Mirziyoyev's political engagement, focusing on reforms in state trading enterprises, export restrictions, subsidies, and trade facilitation.

"Uzbekistan has been one of the most active acceding governments of late," said DDG Hill. She noted that economic reforms are crucial for future growth and that reforming economies tend to grow faster even after joining the WTO.

The meeting was part of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings. Antonella Bassani from the World Bank acknowledged Uzbekistan's policy changes and pledged support for its WTO accession. Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev stated that Uzbekistan is aligning its economy with international standards as per Presidential Decree No. PD-85, aiming for WTO membership by 2026.

Chief Negotiator Azizbek Urunov emphasized progress since 2023, reaching market access agreements with 20 members. He stressed legislative reform to ensure compliance with international norms.

"In the years ahead, we will continue to focus on building the institutions and infrastructure that will support Uzbekistan’s integration into the global economy," Urunov said.

The event included various officials such as Ambassador Furqat Sidikov of Uzbekistan to the United States and representatives from international organizations and private sectors.
