The World Trade Organization (WTO) is organizing a Regional Workshop on Trade and Public Health in Rabat from May 28 to 30, 2024. The workshop is aimed at government officials from WTO members and observers in French-speaking Africa. Applications for participation are open until April 3, 2024.

"The workshop, organized in collaboration with the Secretariats of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), follows a holistic approach to the links between public health, trade, and intellectual property," according to the announcement. It will draw on the second edition of the trilateral study by WHO-WIPO-WTO titled “Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation: Intersections between Public Health, Intellectual Property, and Trade.”

Over three days, participants will explore how multilateral trade agreements can help address urgent public health needs. They will engage in practical case studies focused on examining key policy tools and applying them effectively to enhance public health outcomes.

"This workshop is specifically for government officials working on trade, intellectual property, and public health issues," it stated. The focus will be on collaboration and coordination among officials across these three policy areas.

French-speaking African countries that are WTO members or observers are invited to submit up to four applications from capital-based officials across different government authorities. Up to two candidates may be selected per country.

Further details regarding the application process are available online.
