An event titled "A joint conversation on women’s economic empowerment," hosted by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) on March 26, showcased recent initiatives aimed at addressing gender inequality in trade and fostering women's empowerment.
Speakers discussed developments related to trade and gender. The WTO's Trade and Gender Office highlighted three member-led outcomes from the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, marking progress in advancing gender-responsive policies. Anoush der Boghossian, Head of the WTO's Trade and Gender Office, shared her research findings published in 2023 on the links between trade, gender, and social issues. She also announced a forthcoming training course on trade and gender scheduled for April 15-18, 2024.
The EIF presented outcomes from its "Empower Women, Power Trade" initiative aimed at transforming women's economic lives in least developed countries through targeted projects. A review emphasized the importance of gender-responsive policies and collaboration to advance gender equality in trade.
Projects were presented by speakers from organizations like the Global Shea Alliance and the International Trade Centre. These initiatives included promoting shea production in West Africa and supporting women entrepreneurs in South Asia to leverage e-commerce.
In closing remarks, Ambassador Nina Tornberg emphasized ongoing efforts for gender equality. She stressed the importance of collaboration between international organizations, governments, and civil society to foster inclusive economic growth.
