The WTO Chairs Conference in India recently focused on the need for resilient and inclusive trade. The event opened with remarks from WTO Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang, who emphasized the significance of the WTO Chairs Programme (WCP) network in strengthening the multilateral trading system. He stated, “Trade negotiations cannot succeed if only a few voices are heard,” highlighting the importance of participation from all countries.

Ajay Bhadoo, Additional Secretary of India's Department of Commerce, discussed the rapid changes in global trade due to digital advancements, sustainability goals, and supply chain resilience. He noted that Asia and Africa are central to these transformations and must lead an inclusive expansion of global trade.

Discussions at the conference included regional approaches to international trade and digital technology's role in empowering marginalized groups such as small businesses, women, and youth. The participants stressed the need for inclusive digital policies.

The conference also addressed how international trade could support sustainable climate actions. Discussions included clean energy, agricultural sustainability, green industrial policies, minerals essential for net-zero emissions transition, and climate-resilient agricultural trade policies.

Ambassador Senthil Pandian praised the WCP's efforts in advancing international trade knowledge across regions. Ambassador Emmanuelle Ivanov-Durand highlighted France's support for knowledge exchange between continents. Ambassador Jung Sung Park emphasized collaboration between Asia and Africa within the WTO framework.

Julian Storm from Australia supported inclusive global trade that benefits developing economies. He advocated for a durable WTO that serves all members effectively.

Satya Srinivas concluded by acknowledging discussions on governance and sustainable development aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals. The conference set a foundation for future collaboration among WTO members, particularly focusing on Asia and Africa.
