Ohmium International has declared its involvement in the first green hydrogen project in Croatia. The company will supply Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers to IVICOM, a Croatian company building a 10-megawatt green hydrogen plant at the INA Rijeka Refinery.

According to a news release on May 20, Ohmium's PEM electrolyzers will operate in a new solar power plant with the objective of decarbonizing INA’s Rijeka Refinery through the production of green hydrogen. The strategy is to enhance Croatia’s energy supply with sustainable hydrogen fuel to cater to the country’s expanding transportation market.

"The green hydrogen installation at the Rijeka Refinery will be a premier example of the green transition in Europe. Ohmium is pleased to be working with leaders such as IVICOM and INA on this pioneering project, as our PEM electrolyzers are uniquely suited for pairing with solar power for promoting refinery decarbonization and green transportation," said Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, in the May 20 news release.

As stated on Ohmium's website, their Lotus PEM electrolyzers utilize entirely renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, which is viewed as a flexible resource for decarbonizing industries globally. These units are interlocking and modular; they are portable and designed to minimize safety risks. The hydrogen produced by these electrolyzers can be tailored to meet specific purity and moisture requirements for different projects.

The technology used by Ohmium is based on PEM electrolysis, which has been employed for six decades to produce hydrogen safely, efficiently, and reliably. According to information from Ohmium's website, the creation of this green hydrogen occurs in three steps: water flows into the anode where electricity splits it into hydrogen, oxygen and electrons; then the hydrogen protons are conducted through the PEM where they react with electrons from the power supply to create hydrogen gas.

Dinko Čondić, President of IVICOM’s Management Board, said, "The synergy between IVICOM’s engineering expertise and Ohmium’s cutting-edge PEM electrolyzer technology will be key to successful project realization. This partnership is in line with our company vision of prioritizing green projects and green hydrogen innovation for a sustainable future."
