A workshop held by the World Trade Organization (WTO) recently allowed participants to assess the incentives for technology transfer under the TRIPS Agreement, focusing on the challenges and experiences of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in utilizing technological advancements for economic development.

During the workshop, WTO Deputy Director-General Johanna Hill highlighted the significant efforts made by developed members in submitting 318 reports since 2003, detailing actions related to technology transfer in accordance with Article 66.2 of the TRIPS Agreement.

Ambassador Pimchanok Pitfield of Thailand, Chair of the Council for TRIPS, emphasized the importance of these reports in understanding technology transfer mechanisms and tailoring programs to meet the priority needs of LDCs. She encouraged participants, especially LDC members, to delve into the reports for a deeper analysis than what is typically feasible during formal Council meetings.

Ambassador Kadra Ahmed Hassan of Djibouti, coordinator of the WTO's LDC Group, outlined health, agriculture, and the environment as key priority areas identified during the workshop. She also highlighted the program's aim to actively involve all participants in the subsequent TRIPS Council meeting, enhancing the workshop's impact on the Council's work in technology transfer.
