The United States will provide Ukraine with weapons and equipment under a $2.98 billion funding package aimed at ensuring the country is prepared to defend its independence for years to come.

Politico reports the move comes as Ukraine continues to fight against the Russian invasion that began six months ago.

“This will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and munitions, counter-unmanned aerial systems and radars to ensure it can continue to defend itself over the long term,” Biden said, according to Politico.

Politico said the package is part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and includes more than 250,000 rounds of ammunition, six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, a new counter-drone capability, RQ-20 Puma drones and counter-battery radars.

The UN estimates there have been 5,000 civilians killed, and now the U.S. State Department is urging U.S. citizens to leave Ukraine, according to Politico.

Biden has praised Ukraine for remaining “resolute and strong” and said the U.S. will continue “to celebrate Ukraine as a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous state for decades to come,” Politico reported.
