In recognition of World Endangered Species Day and International Day for Biological Diversity, Mary Kay Inc., based in Dallas, Texas, has committed to supporting native oyster restoration projects in the UK and continental Europe through its partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and other partners in the region, according to a press release.

“Mary Kay is proud to support The Nature Conservancy’s work to help reintroduce the native European oyster to restore critical marine biodiversity,” said Deborah Gibbins, Mary Kay’s COO, in a press release. “The Nature Conservancy’s vast experience in oyster reef restoration on four continents gives us confidence in their efforts to revitalize these rare and critically endangered habitats in European marine waters. At Mary Kay, we’re focused on leaving the planet better than we found it. That includes protecting creatures large and small.”

The efforts are fueled by findings of the significant benefits oyster reefs can offer humans and the environment. According to the press release, a single oyster can serve as a filter for 240 liters per day, promoting an increase in water quality. The process also helps maintain diversity among fish and invertebrate marine species, as well as vulnerable marine habitats that have recently experienced an 85% loss worldwide.

“Oyster reefs are some of the best investments we can make in conserving natural systems,” said Dr. Elizabeth McLeod, who leads on reef conservation for TNC’s Global Reef Program, in a press release. “Healthy oyster populations ensure cleaner water and help shield coastal areas and the people who live there from the impacts of climate change. With support from funders like Mary Kay, TNC can restore and protect these important systems for the long term.”

The initiative is supported by TNC, who helped launch the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance. The beauty company’s collaboration with TNC And Nora Network will help leverage projects related to local biodiversity protection and marine resources in the region, including oyster restoration sites in the UK and in continental Europe.
