Chevron Shipping Co. is set to join Sea Cargo Charter, practicing responsible shipping reporting to promote decarbonization and green environmental actions.

In a release Dec. 9, the company said Sea Cargo Charter provides a global standard for reporting shipping emissions that advances decarbonization in the industry.

"We are very pleased to welcome Chevron in the Sea Cargo Charter," Jan Dieleman, chair of the Sea Cargo Charter Association and president of Cargill’s Ocean Transportation business, said in the release. "As a large multinational corporation and an oil major, we look forward to their contribution to our shared goal. It is a real pleasure to see another industry leader joining the Charter thus committing to our objective to decarbonize shipping,"

The development of the Sea Cargo Charter was executed by global shippers, including Anglo American, Cargill Ocean Transportation, Dow, Norden, TotalEnergies, Trafigura, Euronav, Gorrissen Federspiel and Stena Bulk, the release said.

According to the release, while the Sea Cargo Charter establishes a common baseline to compare shipping activities to adopted climate goals, it remains consistent with International Maritime Organization (IMO) policies for regulating shipping. This includes a goal to target the potential reduction of gas emissions by at least 50% of 2008 levels by 2050.

As IMO policies and regulations adjust to changes in the environment, the initiative is projected to evolve correspondingly, the release said.
