McDermott Will & Emery, an international law firm based in Chicago, recently announced the establishment of a physical presence in Singapore following the Ministry of Law's approval, according to a press release.
McDermott intends for its new Singapore office to improve its client service offerings while allowing the firm to expand throughout Asia.
"We have always been ambitious regarding Asia, but it was necessary to find a more complete and diversified offering that reflects and connects with the firm's global strengths," Michael S. Poulos, the partner in charge of strategy, said.
McDermott, which already has a strong customer base across Asia, views Singapore as a hub for future development in the Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia regions.
"It became clear over time that Singapore was the place to establish our hub," Poulos continued.
While the firm maintains significant client relationships in key markets such as China, Korea, Indonesia and Japan, the firm's India practice also benefits from strong connectivity across Asia-Pacific (APAC), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
"We already have strong links between Singapore and U.S., London and key European offices, as well as having a number of lawyers active in the region, so a team on the ground to complement our existing international offering provides a powerful boost to our growth plans," Poulos stated.
The office is in the center of Singapore's commercial sector, in the Raffles Place neighborhood.
Additionally, the multi-practice office will specialize in commercial transactions, energy and infrastructure, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, technology, government investigations/arbitration and private wealth/tax.
