Calypso Lemonade, based out of Milwaukee,Wisconsin, is now available globally, according to an article in the MIlwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Calypso Lemonade is produced by King Juice and has been manufactured on the south side of Milwaukee since 1999. The company was established in 1985.
"Calypso Lemonade is national in the U.S., and international in over 30 countries" David Klavsons, CEO of King Juice told the newspaper. "Internationally, we’ve expanded significantly, we’ve been able to get the trademark in all of these countries. The brand has taken off especially in the UK, parts of the EU, Middle East and Australia."
Klavsons is optimistic about Calypso's prospects internationally.
"It has found consumers across the globe," Klavsons said. "We’ve expanded the flavors we offer. Then we’ve gone into a light line. We’re a full sugar product, a permissible indulgence, but we also knew there was a consumer we wanted to capture in the no-sugar part of the business."
Klavsons also believes the company's glass bottles play a role in their success.
"Everything tastes better in glass, especially in lemonade with the citric acid and lemon concentrate," Klavsons said. "Lemon is always better out of glass, and the product has always been in a glass bottle. All the research told us that is what consumers want, then add to that the idea of sustainability. Our package is fully recyclable, and there is no plastic."
The Journal Sentinel reported that King Juice has partnered with Refresco from France to build a European Calypso manufacturing line. Calypso also sells limeade and "teamonade." Klavsons took over as CEO of the company after it was sold in 2017.
Klavsons is from New York and has a background in the beverage industry, having worked for Glanbia Performance Nutrition and Pepsi Co. before coming to King Beverages. The company's sugarless beverages have proved especially popular in recent years, according to the Journal Sentinel.
