Planet Fitness will expand operations in Mexico over the next five years though a franchise agreement with Fitness Para Todos.

The agreement, announced Aug. 9, will bring at least 80 new fitness centers for the brand throughout Mexico, according to the Laconia Daily Sun.

The global fitness chain has 2,170 locations across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, Panama and Mexico. Currently, the company has five locations in Mexico.

"This significant development agreement is a testament to the progress we have made executing against our strategic international growth and development plans," Planet Fitness CEO Chris Rondeau said in a company press release.

Fitness Para Todos has developed U.S. brands in Mexico including Old Navy and American Eagle, the Laconia Daily Sun reported.

Planet Fitness is a gym chain boasting "a high-quality fitness experience for extremely affordable prices," the company said in its press release.

"With this expansion, we are meeting an important need in the market as 73% of the Mexican population is overweight and 97% of the population doesn't yet belong to a gym," Rondeau said in the release. "As we further expand the judgement free zone and bring our high-quality and affordable fitness experience to Mexico, FPT is an ideal franchise group to partner with given their deep knowledge of the local markets, and their real estate, marketing and operational expertise."
