Swansea University has been recognized as a first-class institution for its environmental efforts, ranking 13th among UK universities in the People & Planet University League. This assessment is led by students and evaluates universities on their policies and performance in areas such as carbon reduction, energy use, waste management, water conservation, sustainable food sourcing, ethical investment, workers’ rights, and education for sustainable development.
The university has achieved a 45 percent reduction in carbon emissions from its campuses and vehicle fleet. Efforts to further sustainability include a decarbonisation program that converts 22 buildings from gas boilers to renewable air-source heat. The university has also implemented a smart-building initiative with the installation of 7,500 automatic LED lights and solar panels generating renewable energy across campus rooftops.
Biodiversity initiatives have resulted in more than 1.3 hectares of campus land being managed as wildflower meadows. These areas now support four species of orchid and priority conservation species such as brown-banded carder bees and small blue butterflies. Additionally, Swansea University now reuses or recycles 62 percent of what was previously disposed of as campus waste.
These projects are part of Swansea’s strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2035 and fulfill its Nature Positive pledge while supporting the wellbeing of staff, students, and the wider community.
Earlier this year, Swansea University was ranked 36th globally in the Times Higher Education UN SDG Impact Rankings for teaching and research related to sustainability.
Registrar and Chief Operating Officer Niamh Lamond stated: “At Swansea University we believe in leading by example. Whether through research, teaching, or showcasing decarbonisation across our campuses, we are proud to be driving change at scale.
“Being environmentally sustainable not only aligns with our purpose, but also brings efficiencies and operational savings that support the University's financial sustainability.”
Sustainability Manager Teifion Maddocks commented: “Being in the top 10 per cent is a tremendous achievement and reflects the passion and commitment of our staff and students.
“Our position demonstrates Swansea’s strength as one of just a few research-led universities at the top of the table, addressing the operational impacts of a large complex organisation and enabling positive academic outcomes for people and planet.”
