The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa has issued a security alert for U.S. citizens regarding planned demonstrations on Monday, December 15, at several locations in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The embassy warns that these demonstrations may escalate and become violent without warning.
In its message to U.S. citizens, the embassy stated: "The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to maintain a low profile and limit unnecessary movement." The embassy also provided several safety recommendations, including reviewing personal security plans, ensuring families have enough food and water in case they need to stay home for several days, packing essential items such as clothing, medications, and travel documents in a bag that can be carried easily, and having an emergency action plan that does not rely on assistance from the U.S. government.
The embassy encouraged citizens to use commercial transportation if they wish to leave the area, avoid crowds and demonstrations, remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local media for updates, and keep a low profile.
For those needing emergency assistance, the consular section can be reached at +243 81-556-0151/0152 or +243-972-616-193 during after hours and weekends. Additional resources are available on the embassy's website. Citizens are also advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.
