The U.S. Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a security alert following the recent capture of Uvira by the M23 armed group, which is reportedly backed by Rwanda. The embassy warns that fighting in South Kivu province has intensified, increasing risks for civilians in the area.
U.S. citizens are advised to avoid travel to South Kivu and consider using commercial options if they wish to leave. The embassy states, "There are no plans for U.S. government-coordinated assistance for U.S. citizens as travel to the region is restricted for U.S. government personnel."
The alert recommends several safety measures: reviewing personal security plans, ensuring families have enough food and water for several days, keeping essential items packed, monitoring local media, avoiding large crowds, being aware of surroundings, carrying identification, maintaining a low profile, and having an emergency departure plan that does not rely on U.S. government help. The embassy encourages citizens to review information on crisis and evacuations.
For assistance, the embassy provides contact information for emergencies and maintains a list of local resources on its website. Citizens can reach out via email at ACSKinshasa@state.gov or visit https://cd.usembassy.gov/. Additional support is available through State Department Consular Affairs at +1 888-407-4747 or +1 202-501-4444.
Travelers are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and follow the embassy’s social media channels for ongoing information.
