The U.S. Embassy in Wellington and the U.S. Consulate General in Auckland are now accepting applications for their 2026 Foreign National Student Intern Program (FNSIP). The program is designed for university students interested in gaining practical experience within an international setting.

Internships will be available at both the Wellington embassy and the Auckland consulate, depending on the position. The positions are unpaid and do not provide future employment rights or benefits.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the start of the program, citizens or permanent legal residents of New Zealand, enrolled full-time at a university (either undergraduate or postgraduate), and planning to return to their studies after completing the internship. Candidates should also have good academic standing, be available for the full academic year from February to December, and be able to work an average of 20–25 hours per week.

Students from various academic backgrounds—including humanities, engineering, law, business, social sciences, computer science, and international affairs—are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to have strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications as well as social media literacy and strong writing abilities.

During selection, factors such as conflict of interest, nepotism, residency status, and work permit eligibility will be considered.

The internship positions include roles focused on political and economic research (with emphasis on developments in the Cook Islands), regional security support in Wellington, human resources assistance in Wellington, management operations analysis in Wellington, consular services in Auckland for U.S. citizens and visa applicants, and public diplomacy efforts involving cultural programs and digital outreach.

Application materials required include a CV or resume highlighting relevant skills and experience; a statement of interest; official transcripts; written permission from their educational institution; and a signed Gratuitous Service Agreement. Applications must be submitted by email with “Foreign National Student Intern Program” as the subject line by January 9th, 2026 at 5:00 pm. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
