On December 10, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Burundi issued a security alert concerning increased armed violence near the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Burundi, specifically around the DRC city of Uvira. According to the embassy, there have been no reports of violence on the Burundian side of the border so far, but officials noted that "the situation remains fluid."
The embassy advised U.S. citizens to avoid travel to areas of Burundi that share a border with the DRC. It also clarified its current position: "The Embassy would like to emphasize that it has not currently made any significant changes to its security posture at this time."
