The U.S. Embassy in Nassau has issued a security alert for American citizens traveling or residing in The Bahamas during the holiday season. According to the embassy, there is a historical increase in crime during this period and travelers are advised to stay alert and aware of their surroundings.
Local police have also cautioned the public about safety concerns throughout the holidays, repeating warnings similar to those given in previous years.
The embassy provided several recommendations for personal safety, including not physically resisting robbery attempts, being cautious at banks and ATMs, avoiding displays of wealth, parking in well-lit areas without leaving valuables in vehicles, and maintaining a low profile.
For assistance, Americans can contact the U.S. Embassy Nassau at +1-242-322-1181 or via email at ACSNassau@state.gov. Additional resources include the State Department’s Consular Affairs offices and information on enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates. More details are available on the embassy's website: https://bs.usembassy.gov/.
The embassy encourages U.S. citizens to follow its social media channels for further security updates.
