The U.S. Embassy in Tunis has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) program for secondary school educators. The initiative is open to teachers, administrators, curriculum developers, textbook writers, and Ministry of Education officials.
The SUSI program will be held at various academic institutions across the United States over a five-week period during summer 2026. The program includes a one-week integrated academic field experience and is designed to help participants develop curricula about the United States. Content will focus on American historical documents and visits to significant U.S. historical and natural landmarks.
According to information provided by the embassy, "SUSIs for Secondary Educators focus on content and materials about the United States, rather than teaching methods and pedagogy." Each institute session will run between late May and early June 2026.
Applicants are expected to be mid-career professionals—typically aged between 30 and 45 years old—who are highly motivated secondary-school teachers or administrators serving students aged 14–18. High proficiency in English is required. Preference will be given to those with limited or no prior experience in the United States who have demonstrated professional engagement in secondary or higher education.
Participants should come from institutions interested in incorporating aspects of U.S. studies into their curricula or developing new courses related to American studies. The embassy states that candidates must be willing "to respectfully engage with fellow participants representing different backgrounds and points of view."
Applications must be submitted via email to TunisELprograms@state.gov by December 29, 2025. Questions regarding the application process can also be sent to this address with “SUSI—Secondary Educators” included in the subject line.
Further details about the institutes can be found at https://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/study-us-institutes.
