Tammi Wortham, senior vice president of Human Resources at Sun Life U.S., has been recognized with an Icon Award from the Boston Business Journal. The award is part of the publication's Women Who Mean Business program, which honors women making a significant impact in Greater Boston's business community through both professional achievements and community leadership. Wortham was nominated by her colleagues at the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley, where she serves as board chair.
Wortham has led human resources at Sun Life U.S. for over five years, guiding the company’s people strategy during the pandemic. During this period, employee engagement reached high levels while most staff worked remotely. Sun Life also maintained nearly a 95% employee retention rate in recent years.
David Healy, president of Sun Life U.S., said, "Tammi is not just great at her job, she has helped put Sun Life on the map as an employer of choice and a company that leads the way in benefits and employee programs. The dedication and passion that she brings to her work and community efforts, including the United Way, are contagious. Tammi truly is an icon."
Wortham is known for her thoughtful listening skills and purposeful leadership style. She has become recognized in the HR field for highlighting trends and providing expertise on topics such as employee engagement and workplace benefits. In 2019, she led development of Sun Life’s paid family and medical leave program, supporting employees facing illness or injury or caring for family members. More recently, she oversaw new menopause benefits for employees.
Before her current role at Sun Life, Wortham served as vice president of Group Benefits Client Services at the company and previously held executive positions at Prudential and The Hartford Financial Services Group.
As board chair of United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Wortham has contributed to advancing strategies that support communities in Eastern Massachusetts by mobilizing resources for greater opportunities in the region.
Marty Martinez, president and CEO at United Way of Massachusetts Bay, stated: "Tammi is a visionary leader who believes in the potential of everyone she works with, whether as the HR leader at Sun Life or as our board chair, guiding our impact in the community. Her commitment to our work has been invaluable in our efforts to advance thriving, healthy communities."
