The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) hosted a reception at the National Theatre in Taipei to mark the 85th anniversary of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a professional exchange initiative run by the U.S. Department of State. The event drew more than 110 attendees, including notable alumni and leaders from various sectors in Taiwan.

During his opening remarks, AIT Director Raymond Greene highlighted the ongoing significance of the IVLP. “As we mark 85 years of the IVLP, we honor not only its history but the lasting partnerships it continues to spark. Taiwan’s alumni embody that legacy—turning dialogue into collaboration and shared experiences into enduring cooperation between our peoples,” Greene said.

President Lai Ching-te, who previously participated in the IVLP, addressed attendees through a video message. He spoke about how programs like IVLP have contributed to shaping global leadership and fostering mutual understanding.

A panel discussion followed, featuring Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, National Palace Museum Director Hsiao Tsung-huang, Ministry of Digital Affairs Chief Secretary Hu Pei-ti, and AIT Director Raymond Greene. The session was moderated by Shiang Chen-wei (Marcos), Senior Reporter for SETTV’s The Borderless World and also an alumnus of IVLP.

The IVLP was established in 1940 with the goal of bringing current and emerging foreign leaders to the United States for short-term professional exchanges. Participants gain direct exposure to American society and culture. Managed by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs within the U.S. Department of State alongside partner organizations across America, IVLP supports around 4,000 participants each year. Its alumni include over 500 current or former heads of state or government as well as Nobel Laureates, Cabinet Ministers, members of Parliament, and leaders from various fields.
