The United States government has announced stricter measures to address illegal immigration, emphasizing that those who attempt to enter or remain in the country unlawfully will face significant consequences. In an op-ed published by Chargé d’affaires Anu Prattipati on April 1, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Kosovo outlined recent policy changes and enforcement actions under President Trump’s administration.
“If you try to enter the United States illegally, lie to get a visa, work without legal permission, or stay in the United States after your visa or visa waiver period expires, you will face serious penalties. These include jail time, deportation, and a permanent ban on obtaining a U.S. visa in the future,” wrote Prattipati.
The op-ed urged individuals with family or friends residing illegally in the United States to advise them to return home voluntarily.
Prattipati noted that attempts to evade detection are unlikely to succeed due to increased border security and enforcement efforts. “Some people believe they can sneak into the United States and avoid being caught. This is not true. The Trump Administration has strengthened border security and greatly increased the number of illegal aliens being arrested and deported.”
According to figures cited for February 2025, illegal border crossings dropped by 94% compared to February 2024, while arrests of undocumented individuals within the country rose by 627%. Those apprehended may face detention, removal from the country, bans on re-entry, fines, or criminal charges.
The statement also highlighted that fraudulent activities related to visas—such as using false documents or overstaying permitted periods—are considered serious crimes. “If you break the law in this way, you will be punished, and you may never be allowed to enter the United States again,” Prattipati stated.
The dangers faced by migrants attempting unauthorized entry were underscored as well. Criminal organizations are said to target such individuals for violence and exploitation during their journeys northward.
The U.S. government is collaborating with other countries across the Western Hemisphere to prevent migrants from reaching its borders unlawfully. These joint efforts aim both at safeguarding American citizens and at reducing harm experienced by migrants themselves.
Further measures have been introduced against those facilitating illegal immigration. “Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new visa restriction policy for foreign officials – including immigration, customs, and port authority staff – who fail to help stop illegal immigration,” Prattipati explained. Similar restrictions already apply within transportation and tourism sectors.
In conclusion, Prattipati stressed: “Illegal entry not only breaks U.S. laws; it also puts your safety and well-being in jeopardy... For everyone, the message is simple: Make the right choice, follow the law, and do not risk your safety, your family, or your future.”
