United States Ambassador to Egypt Herro Mustafa Garg visited Esna in Luxor Governorate on December 6 to observe the progress of U.S.-funded development projects aimed at restoring heritage sites, supporting local businesses, and creating economic opportunities.
During her visit, Ambassador Mustafa Garg met with the co-founders of Takween Integrated Community Development. This organization led the implementation of the U.S.-supported initiatives in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The ambassador toured restored locations such as the 18th-century Wakalat al-Geddawi, improved market streets and public spaces, upgraded visitor facilities at the Temple of Khnum, and community-based projects like Esna Women’s Kitchen.
“Esna’s development is a powerful example of how U.S.-Egyptian partnership, combined with American expertise and innovative partners, can protect invaluable cultural heritage while building a more prosperous future,” said Ambassador Mustafa Garg. “The United States is proud to stand side-by-side with our Egyptian partners as we invest in projects that advance mutual prosperity and anchor a more peaceful, stable region.”
According to information from the embassy’s website (https://eg.usembassy.gov/), these U.S.-funded efforts have revitalized Esna’s historic center, resulting in a threefold increase in visitors and new economic opportunities for residents. The initiatives have attracted private investment, provided training for over 300 locals, documented Esna’s heritage assets, and established a model for sustainable tourism that supports families and businesses.
The city’s restoration has received international recognition through awards from organizations such as the UN World Tourism Organization and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. These honors highlight successful collaborations between the United States and Egypt in preserving cultural heritage.
