United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Nicholas Merrick, outlined his main objectives during a welcome reception at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Prague. The event brought together politicians, diplomats, businesspeople, and leaders from academia and civil society.
Ambassador Merrick emphasized that his primary goals include serving and protecting American citizens, strengthening security cooperation, expanding commercial and economic ties, and upholding shared values such as free expression, individual liberties, and democratic principles.
He stated that he and his team will “focus on increasing security cooperation and encouraging greater investment in collective and individual defense so Czechia, and every country in the NATO alliance, meets capability targets and has both the means and the political will to safeguard European security now and in the future.”
Merrick also addressed opportunities for increased trade between the United States and Czechia. He said: “Czechia’s innovative economy and talented workforce make it an outstanding partner for American business. My goal is to expand opportunities for balanced trade and investment that deliver real benefits for both our countries.”
Expressing gratitude to President Trump for nominating him as ambassador to Czechia, Merrick encouraged optimism about bilateral relations but noted ongoing challenges: “a much-needed modernization of our alliances and economic partnerships is necessary to ensure they remain strong and effective for the future. I look forward to working with you to advance that mutually beneficial goal.”
Drawing on his experience in sports, business, and education, Merrick concluded: “I am confident, working together with strength, teamwork, and humility, we can make our relationship stronger in the years ahead.”
Nicholas Merrick began leading the U.S. Embassy in Prague on October 20, 2025. He presented his credentials to Czech President Petr Pavel three days later.
