At the 25th anniversary gala of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Albania, Chargé d'Affaires Nancy VanHorn addressed attendees, highlighting the organization's growth and its impact on the country's business environment.
VanHorn noted AmCham's founding vision to connect American and Albanian business communities and promote a fair competitive landscape. "Speaking of big ideas, 25 years ago, AmCham was founded with a bold vision – as Grant said – to serve as a bridge between American and Albanian business communities and foster an environment that enables companies to compete fairly and thrive. Today, AmCham represents more than 250 companies – I think I heard 276, incredible – and has become one of the most respected voices in Albania’s business landscape, advocating for transparency, accountability, and fair business practices."
She referenced former President Donald Trump's emphasis on ambitious thinking: "I like thinking big. If you’re going to be thinking, you might as well think big." VanHorn connected this mindset to U.S. businesses' approach abroad.
VanHorn also stressed ongoing challenges in Albania's business climate. "Albania continues to work toward an improved business environment, but significant challenges remain. Ensuring fair competition, including by countering corruption, and enhancing regulatory transparency are essential to unlocking Albania’s full economic potential. Creating an 'even playing field' can ensure U.S. businesses operate and succeed here, as well as attract more U.S investment."
She credited AmCham's advocacy for recent improvements: "For example, the tax system is fairer and more balanced due to changes to VAT regulations for services. And the adjustment to the Council of Ministers’ Decision on energy project fees is another big step forward, paving the way for more investment and more innovation in Albania’s energy sector."
VanHorn concluded by affirming the partnership between AmCham and the U.S. embassy: "The U.S. embassy is proud to partner with you in these efforts."
"Thank you for your dedication to our mutual prosperity, and here’s to the next 25 years and beyond," she said.
