The U.S. Embassy has issued a holiday safety notice for American citizens in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. The message highlights that crime rates and threats of attacks often rise during the holiday season in the region. According to the embassy, violent crimes historically increase at this time of year, with criminals becoming more active and taking greater risks. The advisory notes that criminal acts can occur anywhere, including locations frequented by expatriates.
The embassy stated: "It’s a time of year when threats of attacks and crime rates may increase. This region has historically seen an increase in violent crimes during the holiday season when criminals may be more active and willing to take risks. A criminal act can occur at any time and place, including in places frequented by expatriates. Exercising extra care and caution is important."
U.S. citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow several safety recommendations provided by the embassy to reduce their risk of becoming victims of crime. These include maintaining heightened situational awareness, especially in public or crowded areas; ensuring all family members know emergency contact procedures; using home and vehicle alarms; keeping car windows up and doors locked; staying alert to suspicious activity; securing valuables; avoiding displaying cash or jewelry; concealing packages in vehicles; exercising caution while driving—particularly during wet weather or at night—and varying travel routes and times.
The advisory also warns about the potential for lone-wolf attacks by individuals acting alone to commit crimes, advising: "If confronted in a robbery attempt, do not resist; surrender belongings to protect your safety." The embassy further emphasizes: "Increased vigilance and adherence to security protocols are essential during the holiday season. Please take proactive steps to minimize risk and prioritize personal safety."
