Instagram has announced new features aimed at helping creators expand their reach globally by making content more accessible in different Indian languages. The announcement was made during the ‘House of Instagram’ event held in Mumbai.
Meta revealed that its artificial intelligence-powered translation tool will soon support five additional Indian languages on both Instagram and Facebook. This update will allow users to translate reels into Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi. Previously, the feature supported translations between English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese.
According to Meta: "Creators have the option to use Meta AI to transform their reels, so they sound and look fluent in some of the world’s most spoken languages, helping them reach more people globally and grow an international audience. When turned on, the tool preserves the sound and tone of your voice, so your reels feel authentically you. You can also choose to enable the lip syncing feature, which syncs the translated audio to your mouth’s movements, so it looks like you’re actually speaking the language."
In addition to translation updates, Instagram is introducing new Indian fonts for its editing tools. Creators will be able to style text and captions using Devanagari and Bengali-Assamese scripts in several languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Assamese. This feature is set to roll out on Android devices soon.
The company explained how these font options can be accessed: "Within your editing timeline, head to 'Text' on the bottom tools tray. From there click on the 'Aa' icon where you’ll see the list of fonts available. If your device is already in Devanagari or Bengali-Assamese scripts, these fonts will be defaulted in the font tab. If not, slightly swipe down when you’re on the 'all fonts' tab to filter your fonts by language."
These updates are part of a series of recent changes designed for creators on Instagram. Other recent additions include tools powered by Meta AI for restyling photos and videos within Stories as well as expanded editing features such as bulk caption editing and reversing videos.
