The White House has issued an executive order establishing the "Genesis Mission," a new national initiative focused on accelerating artificial intelligence (AI)-driven scientific discovery. The order, signed by President Donald J. Trump, outlines a coordinated effort to build an integrated AI platform leveraging federal scientific datasets and research resources.
According to the order, the Genesis Mission aims to "unleash a new age of AI‑accelerated innovation and discovery that can solve the most challenging problems of this century." The mission is designed to bring together federal agencies, national laboratories, universities, and private-sector partners to advance AI capabilities for scientific research.
Responsibility for implementing the mission lies with the Secretary of Energy, who may appoint a senior official to oversee daily operations. The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology will provide overall leadership through coordination among participating agencies.
A key component of the initiative is the creation of the American Science and Security Platform. This infrastructure will integrate high-performance computing resources—including Department of Energy supercomputers—secure cloud-based environments, AI modeling frameworks, predictive models, access to various datasets, and tools for autonomous experimentation in fields such as advanced manufacturing and biotechnology.
Within 60 days of the order's issuance, the Secretary of Energy must identify at least 20 science and technology challenges deemed suitable for AI-driven solutions. These challenges are expected to span domains including critical materials, nuclear energy, quantum information science, semiconductors, and microelectronics. The list will be reviewed annually to reflect progress and emerging needs.
The executive order also emphasizes interagency collaboration and engagement with external partners possessing advanced expertise in AI or scientific domains. It calls for competitive programs such as fellowships and internships aimed at developing workforce skills in AI-enabled scientific discovery.
Security measures are highlighted throughout the document. The Secretary is directed to ensure that all operations meet national security requirements related to data protection, cybersecurity standards, intellectual property management, and user authorization protocols.
Progress reports on operational status, integration across research facilities, public-private partnerships, measurable outcomes in research advances or prototype technologies are required annually from the Department of Energy.
President Trump stated: "From the founding of our Republic, scientific discovery and technological innovation have driven American progress and prosperity. Today, America is in a race for global technology dominance in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), an important frontier of scientific discovery and economic growth."
The Genesis Mission represents one of several steps taken by this administration under its broader America’s AI Action Plan.
