A cyclonic storm named “Ditwah” is currently affecting Sri Lanka, with its center located about 50 kilometers south of Trincomalee at latitude 8.1°N and longitude 81.2°E. The storm is moving in a north-northwest direction, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to many parts of the country.
According to forecasts, most areas across Sri Lanka will experience cloudy skies, intermittent showers, and thundershowers. Rainfall amounts are expected to exceed 200 millimeters in the Northern, North-central, Central, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, and Western provinces. Districts such as Trincomalee, Badulla, Galle, and Matara could see rainfall above 150 millimeters. Other regions may receive more than 75 millimeters of rain. Winds are forecasted to reach speeds between 60-70 km/h with gusts up to 80-90 km/h.
The general public has been advised by local authorities to stay updated through the Department of Meteorology’s advisories and take steps to minimize damage from severe weather conditions.
U.S. government personnel have been instructed to exercise caution: "Exercise caution, limit non-essential travel, and closely monitor local weather updates."
The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka remains open at this time but has stated that any changes regarding operations or consular appointments will be communicated as necessary.
Recommended actions include monitoring local media for weather updates from the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology; avoiding travel to affected areas if possible; securing loose items; sheltering during periods of high wind and rain; following instructions from local authorities; keeping emergency supplies on hand; ensuring travel documents are current; and enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for further updates.
