The United States Embassy in Mexico City has begun what officials describe as the largest transition in U.S. diplomatic history, marked by a move to a new embassy facility. According to Ambassador Ronald D. Johnson, this relocation is not simply a change of address but represents a significant milestone for the relationship between the United States and Mexico.
The new embassy encompasses more than 530,000 square feet and now houses over 1,500 employees under one roof. This consolidation is four times larger than the previous embassy and makes it the largest U.S. Department of State facility outside Washington, D.C. The building was designed with security, modernity, and resilience in mind and features 81 service windows to serve both U.S. citizens and Mexican visitors.
Ambassador Johnson stated, "Moving into our new embassy is not merely a change of address—it is the largest personnel move in the entire history of U.S. diplomacy, a milestone that reflects the scale and importance of our relationship with Mexico."
He emphasized that this transition signifies more than just physical infrastructure: "But, as historic as the structure may be, this moment is about far more than a building. It marks a new era for this important bilateral relationship." He noted that together, the two countries represent a population exceeding 480 million people—greater than that of the European Union—and are linked by trade, family ties, communities, and shared opportunities.
Ambassador Johnson highlighted ongoing cooperation under President Trump and President Sheinbaum on issues such as stopping fentanyl trafficking, weapons smuggling, human smuggling, and expanding what he described as "the world’s largest trade relationship." He added: "Security and prosperity move together, and this embassy stands at that intersection."
Acknowledging those who contributed to making the move possible, Ambassador Johnson said: "This historic move was only possible thanks to the thousands of Mexican and American workers, builders and specialists whose expertise and dedication brought us here. Successfully relocating an embassy of this scale required an unprecedented logistical effort, professional excellence, and a shared commitment to mission. To all who made it possible: thank you."
As operations begin at the new site, Ambassador Johnson concluded: "As we raise our flag over our new embassy, we honor our past but also build our future together as partners and friends. The flag symbolizes our duty to serve the American people and uphold our values. It also reminds us of our opportunity to grow a stronger partnership with Mexico—one that protects our citizens, supports our communities, and builds stronger, safer, and more prosperous nations."
