Somers Farkas has officially begun her tenure as the U.S. Ambassador to Malta after presenting her credentials to President Myriam Spiteri Debono on November 26, 2025. Farkas expressed interest in strengthening ties between the United States and Malta.
Farkas was nominated for the ambassadorial position by President Donald J. Trump in December 2024. She is originally from Virginia and has a background as a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and marketing executive.
Her career includes advocacy for first responders and public safety organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, ASPCA, Police Athletic League, and military service clubs. She previously served as a trustee for the New York City Police Foundation, held an honorary role with the New York City Fire Department, and advised the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
As ambassador, Farkas intends to focus on expanding trade and investment opportunities, enhancing security cooperation and law enforcement collaboration, supporting shared energy interests, and ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens living in Malta.
After the ceremony, Farkas said: “It is an honor to represent our great President, Donald J. Trump, and the American people, in Malta. The Maltese people and the Knights of the Order of St. John played a notable role in America’s fight for independence; America was the first country to recognize Malta’s independence. We are proud of our centuries long friendship and shared democratic values. With our outstanding U.S. Embassy team, we will continue to strengthen our alliance by showcasing American and Maltese excellence, fostering economic opportunities, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic collaborations. I look forward to working with the government and people of Malta and Gozo to achieve our shared vision for the future. On a personal note, I acknowledge my deep Faith and am eager for the opportunity to hear mass with the Maltese Catholic community.”
The appointment highlights ongoing efforts by the United States to maintain strong relations with Malta in areas such as security cooperation and economic engagement.
