Significant progress has been reported in resolving unpaid liabilities owed to contractors who worked on World Bank-financed projects in Afghanistan before August 2021, according to a statement from the institution.

Although these vendors were originally contracted by the former government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and not directly by the World Bank, the organization is assisting in settling eligible and verified outstanding payments. The process involves a thorough review of documentation and independent third-party verification to ensure accuracy.

The World Bank stated: "Payments are being advanced through a robust, multi-layered process of documentation review and independent third-party verification, underscoring the institution’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s private sector and consistent with the principles outlined in the Bank’s May 2025 statement."

The institution expressed its intent to see this effort through completion. "The World Bank looks forward to completing this multi-phased process and ensuring that contractors are properly compensated for goods supplied and services rendered," according to its statement.

It was emphasized that these discussions pertain solely to contractor liabilities from before August 2021. The World Bank Group remains focused on working with international partners to address basic human needs and support private-sector job creation in Afghanistan.
