A new group of Peace Corps volunteers was officially sworn in during a ceremony attended by U.S. Ambassador Claire A. Pierangelo and staff from the U.S. Embassy in Madagascar & Comoros. The event marked the completion of eleven weeks of training for the incoming volunteers, who will now begin their service across Madagascar.
Ambassador Pierangelo addressed the volunteers and attendees, acknowledging both new and returning Peace Corps members. She stated, "I want to specially thank and highlight our returned Peace Corps volunteers and those who are currently serving in the audience because the most important thing about the Peace Corps is that it’s not just a two-year commitment, it’s a lifetime commitment."
The ambassador also noted a milestone for the program: "I am so thrilled that for the first time ever in the history of Peace Corps in Madagascar to welcome our very first Malagasy American Peace Corps volunteer. I promise you that in two years, we are going to have twenty more Malagasy Americans seating over here. They will all represent a distinguished legacy of Americans who, for more than six decades, have chosen to promote peace and friendship through service."
She highlighted the importance of collaboration between volunteers and local partners: "Here in Madagascar, the Peace Corps is a key component of our bilateral relationship. Volunteers live and work side by side with Malagasy colleagues, teachers, farmers, and health workers—sharing knowledge, exchanging culture, and building trust. In doing so, they establish longstanding ties between our two nations and show every day that humanity and kindness is stronger than any difference that may divide us."
Ambassador Pierangelo extended gratitude to host families and local partners: "A special heartfelt thanks to our Malagasy partners and host families. Your generosity, kindness and continued collaboration are what make the Peace Corps’ success in this country."
She concluded her remarks with advice for the new cohort: "To our new Volunteers, it’s simple. Listen, serve with kindness, humility and overall respect, and you will be successful." She congratulated them on their achievement: "Congratulations to each of you on this remarkable achievement. We are thankful that we were able to welcome you here today and may your service be meaningful, your experience is enriching, and your impact lasting."
