Ambassador Lynda C. Blanchard, representing the United States at the United Nations Agencies in Rome, delivered the U.S. national statement during the Second Regular Session of the World Food Program (WFP) Executive Board.

In her remarks, Ambassador Blanchard emphasized that "the sovereignty of nations rests at the foundation of the international system, and the United States will engage on issues that are firmly aligned with and support U.S. priorities." She highlighted the importance of responsible management of American taxpayer funds and contributions to support American farmers.

Blanchard stated, "The United Nations can no longer afford to waste its resources where there is little or no impact." She expressed U.S. support for efforts to provide humanitarian assistance more efficiently and with greater accountability to maximize impact in affected areas.

She noted a shared commitment among member states to end hunger but stressed the need to reduce reliance on aid by promoting sustainable paths toward self-sufficiency for nations and communities.

Addressing WFP’s leadership, Blanchard acknowledged recent progress but called for further action: "While WFP has made significant efforts over recent months to further focus the Organization’s limited resources, more must be done."

She outlined key priorities for WFP’s strategy:

• Assisting those most in need during emergencies.

• Maintaining fiscal responsibility.

• Improving oversight, including of partners.

• Increasing burden sharing through partnerships to enhance efficiency and impact.

Blanchard also reaffirmed that "the U.S. position on the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change, DEI, and gender ideology remains unchanged." She encouraged other member nations to increase their contributions in support of WFP’s work.

Recognizing humanitarian workers’ dedication, she said: "The United States also recognizes the courage of WFP staff who continue to work tirelessly to assist those in need. Humanitarian workers must never be a target. We strongly condemn the recent unjust detentions of WFP staff in Yemen."

Concluding her statement, Blanchard affirmed ongoing U.S. collaboration with WFP and other member states: "We all must advance our commitment to deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance in an efficient, effective, and accountable manner." She also extended wishes for a swift recovery to Madame Executive Director.
