On November 9, Panamanian authorities intercepted a tugboat in the Archipelago of Las Perlas, resulting in the seizure of more than 13 metric tons of cocaine. The operation, conducted by the Panamanian Air and Naval Service (SENAN), was supported by U.S. law enforcement through intelligence sharing. Ten individuals from Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela were arrested during the operation.
The U.S. Embassy in Panama recognized this event as a significant achievement in joint efforts to combat drug trafficking. According to the embassy, this single-day seizure accounts for about 10 percent of the typical annual amount seized by both countries in Panama. The embassy stated that such operations disrupt transnational criminal organizations operating in the region.
Kevin Marino Cabrera, U.S. Ambassador to Panama, said: “We commend the professionalism, bravery, and dedication of the Panamanian officers who made this operation possible. Their decisive action delivers a major blow to the criminal networks that profit from narcotrafficking and endanger communities across our hemisphere. Panama’s leadership and cooperation are essential to ensuring a safer and more secure region.”
The embassy emphasized that under President Trump’s administration, combating narcotrafficking networks remains a priority for regional stability and public safety. The statement highlighted ongoing support for Panama’s security efforts and reinforced the importance of bilateral cooperation.
The embassy concluded: “This operation sends a clear and powerful message: the U.S.-Panama partnership is strong, and together, we will continue working to ensure the safety and security of our people.”
