At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Amazonian countries have announced the formation of the Alliance for Sustainable, Resilient, and Integrated Transport in the Amazon. The initiative is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) and the World Bank Group. The goal is to improve regional connectivity and transform transportation systems across the Amazon.

The launch event was held at the IDB Group Pavilion, where transportation ministers from Amazonian nations joined senior representatives from both supporting organizations to sign a declaration. This agreement seeks to promote an inclusive, efficient, and resilient approach to transport development in partnership with stakeholders from both public and private sectors.

A key objective of the Alliance is to develop a Regional Action Plan for 2026-2030. This plan will serve as a roadmap for enhancing connectivity and increasing efficiency within transportation systems throughout the region.

The initiative aligns with existing programs: it supports the sustainable infrastructure pillar of the IDB Group’s Amazonia Forever program, connects with the South Connection program’s focus on connectivity, and complements the “livable Amazonia” pillar of the World Bank Group’s Amazonia Viva initiative.

Participants at the launch highlighted challenges facing the region, including limited infrastructure, reliance on fossil fuels, vulnerability to disasters, and barriers to accessing basic services. These issues are seen as major obstacles to development and regional integration.

The Alliance is structured around four main strategic pillars:

- Improving connectivity and access to basic services in isolated communities

- Promoting efficient, multimodal logistics to support the regional bioeconomy

- Developing resilient infrastructure using nature-based solutions

- Strengthening river transport as a central element for integration and mobility

By working together through this Alliance, participating countries aim to build a transport model that better connects communities, improves service efficiency, and strengthens resilience against climate change impacts.

The IDB Group is hosting over 80 events at COP30 focused on closing financing gaps for resilient development through partnerships and innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean. The organization aims to mobilize at least $6 billion in new announcements during COP30. More information about these efforts can be found on their COP30 page.

Amazonia Forever is a regional coordination program led by IDB Group that works toward protecting biodiversity while accelerating sustainable development through innovative financing, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among all eight countries of Amazonia.

The World Bank Group operates globally with a mission to reduce poverty by providing financing, expertise, and knowledge. Its work includes several agencies such as IBRD, IDA, IFC, MIGA, and ICSID.

Amazonia Viva is an initiative under the World Bank Global Challenge Program aimed at safeguarding natural assets in the Amazon forest biome while promoting inclusive economic opportunities. It works closely with other international partners like IDB Group under broader regional programs such as Amazonia Forever.
