KfW IPEX-Bank has agreed to provide nearly EUR 300 million in financing for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn. The funding will be delivered through a bilateral loan agreement with the Rhine-Ruhr Public Transport Association (VRR), which is responsible for public transport services in the region.

The funds will support the purchase of 36 new FLIRT XL electric multiple units from Stadler Deutschland GmbH, intended for use on subnetwork D of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn. VIAS Rail GmbH is set to begin operating this network at the end of 2029.

Aida Welker, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank, stated: "We're delighted once again to be supporting our long-standing customer VRR and the European manufacturer Stadler. Through our financing, we are helping to provide attractive travel options for passengers in the VRR catchment area and supporting the shift from road to rail, thereby advancing the mobility transition in cities and municipalities."

Oliver Wittke, Spokesperson of the Board of VRR, commented: "High-quality rail vehicles are one of the most important quality criteria for our customers in local rail passenger transport. We're pleased that the modernisation of local transport is being supported with attractive financing solutions and terms, thereby promoting climate-friendly mobility for the benefit of our passengers."

VRR serves as one of Europe's largest public transport authorities and provides services to approximately 7.8 million residents within its jurisdiction.
