U.S. Southern Command leader visits Guyana for talks on security cooperation

Adm. Alvin Holsey, Commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), is visiting Guyana to engage with senior government and defense officials in an effort to strengthen the security partnership between the United States and Guyana.

During his stay in Georgetown, Adm. Holsey is scheduled to meet with Brigadier Ret’d Mark Phillips, Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana who is currently performing the functions of President, as well as Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Defense Staff. The meetings are expected to focus on enhancing security cooperation, maintaining regional stability, and reiterating U.S. support for Guyana’s territorial integrity.

According to the press release, "The defense partnership between the United States and Guyana is long-standing and encompasses joint efforts to counter transnational threats, build capacity, and engage in bilateral training programs and professional development engagements."

U.S. Southern Command collaborates closely with other U.S. government agencies and international partners to promote security across Latin America and the Caribbean. These partnerships aim to improve hemispheric security and prosperity while addressing shared security challenges.
