Typhoon Kalmaegi is expected to make landfall in central Vietnam overnight on November 6 and into the morning of November 7, according to an alert issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Vietnam. The storm will affect areas already experiencing heavy rains and flooding, including the provinces of Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, and northern Dak Lak.

The Vietnamese National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) forecasts that Typhoon Kalmaegi will reach its peak intensity on Thursday before moving inland, with particular impact anticipated across Quang Ngai and Dak Lak provinces. Coastal regions from Hue to Dak Lak may experience waves between 4 to 8 meters high (13 to 26 feet) and a storm surge ranging from 0.3 to 0.6 meters (1 to 2 feet). Winds could exceed speeds of 135 kilometers per hour (84 miles per hour). There are ongoing risks of flooding, flash floods, landslides, and further damage to infrastructure weakened by previous storms.

U.S. Consulate General officials in Ho Chi Minh City have communicated with local authorities who report that assistance is being provided to residents and visitors in affected areas.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General advise all U.S. citizens in these regions to exercise caution and follow instructions from local authorities. “The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Vietnam urge all U.S. citizens in affected areas to maintain caution and follow the directions of local authorities.”

Residents are encouraged not to walk or drive through flooded zones, stay updated via local media outlets for weather information as storm paths can change rapidly, and monitor updates from official sources such as the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center at https://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/jtwc.html or NCHMF at https://www.nchmf.gov.vn/kttv/. Further guidance can be found on the embassy’s website at https://vn.usembassy.gov/ or travel.state.gov.
