The U.S. Embassy in Montenegro has issued a security alert ahead of a basketball game scheduled for today at the Moraca Sports Arena in Podgorica, where the Montenegrin team Buducnost will face Turkey's Besiktas. The advisory follows last week's incident involving Turkish nationals and local Montenegrins.
According to the embassy, the "Varvari" group, which was involved in recent incidents targeting the Turkish community and is known for violence at sports events, is expected to attend the match. The game is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
Given recent tensions and an increased police presence, the embassy has advised American citizens to avoid attending the game. "The Embassy also urges all American Citizens to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and monitor local news for updates."
The embassy recommends several precautions: "Avoid the area near the Moraca Sports Arena during and after the scheduled game. Remain vigilant and maintain situational awareness. Avoid large gatherings, demonstrations, or areas where tensions may escalate. Monitor local news and Embassy communications for updates. Refrain from engaging in discussions on sensitive topics. Ensure your travel documents are up to date and easily accessible."
U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Montenegro are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov to receive safety alerts from the embassy.
