Weight loss and health product scams have seen a significant rise, according to new data from Santander. The bank reports that between the first and third quarters of 2025, the value of these scams increased by 417%, while the number of incidents rose by 286%.
In the third quarter alone, scammers stole £3,742 through fraudulent weight loss injections, pens, tablets, and fat-dissolving products. This represents a 143% increase compared to the previous quarter. Scams related to supplements, pills, and medicines also more than doubled in value during this period—from £6,339 in Q2 to £13,030 in Q3.
Both men (45%) and women (55%) have been targeted by these schemes. On average, each scam cost customers £120.
Santander is advising consumers to remain vigilant when shopping online. The bank recommends three key steps:
"Check the Source: Look closely at the account posting the ad. Scammers often create profiles that mimic real brands but have subtle differences in spelling or logos.
Assess the risk: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Scams often use phrases like “limited-time offer,” “exclusive deal,” or “free giveaway” to create urgency.
Follow platform guidelines: If you’re using common online selling sites, stick to their recommended payment channels."
