Travelers face new restrictions at Lithuania-Belarus border

On October 29, 2025, the Lithuanian government introduced new travel restrictions at its land border with Belarus. These measures will remain in effect until at least November 30, 2025.

The Šalčininkai checkpoint is now completely closed to all travelers. The Medininkai border crossing remains open but with significant limitations. Only individuals who meet specific exceptions are allowed to cross at this point.

According to the Lithuanian government, exceptions include citizens of NATO countries—including U.S. citizens—citizens of Lithuania and their family members returning home, citizens of European Union member states, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Ukraine, as well as those holding valid Lithuanian residence permits or humanitarian visas traveling to Lithuania. Exceptional cases may also be permitted based on decisions by the government. A full list of exceptions is available on the Government of Lithuania’s official website (information provided in Lithuanian).

The U.S. Embassy in Vilnius has issued a reminder for American citizens: "Do not travel to Belarus, consistent with the Department of State’s Level 4 travel advisory." The embassy further advises: "For U.S. citizens in Belarus, depart as soon as possible." Additional recommendations include confirming updated border restrictions and closures, monitoring local media for updates, reviewing personal security plans, ensuring travel documents are current and accessible, and carrying proper identification such as a U.S. passport with any required visa.

U.S. citizens seeking assistance can contact the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius by phone at +(370) (5) 266-5600 or via email at ConSec@state.gov. Further information about country conditions is available through the embassy’s website.
