WhatsApp has announced a new feature aimed at improving the security of users' chat backups. The company is introducing passkey-enabled encryption, which will allow users to protect their chat backups using biometric authentication methods such as fingerprints or facial recognition, or with a screen lock code.

According to WhatsApp, this update removes the need for users to remember complex passwords or lengthy encryption keys. Instead, they can secure their backups quickly and easily. “Passkeys will allow you to use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to end-to-end encrypt your chat backups, so you no longer have to memorize a password or a 64-digit encryption key. You’ll be able to keep your WhatsApp chat backups safe, accessible, and private with just a tap or a glance,” the company stated.

The rollout of this feature will take place over several weeks and months. Users interested in enabling this option can find it in the WhatsApp settings under Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
