The U.S. Embassy in Podgorica has issued a warning to American citizens in Montenegro following an outbreak of violence over the weekend. The incident involved Turkish nationals and local Montenegrins, resulting in increased tensions and inflammatory language directed at the Turkish community. There have also been reports of property damage, including the burning of a business owned by Turkish nationals.

According to updates from the embassy, about 200 protestors have gathered in the City Kvart area, with some clashing with local police. Two additional protests, each with around 200 participants, are also reported: one group is moving toward the Turkish Embassy while another remains stationary in Zabjelo.

The embassy has advised U.S. citizens to avoid these areas and remain cautious. In its statement, the embassy said: "The U.S. Embassy in Podgorica advises American citizens avoid these areas and encourages everyone to exercise caution, maintain situational awareness, avoid all demonstrations, and refrain from engaging in discussions on sensitive topics."

Americans in Montenegro are urged to stay alert, avoid large gatherings or demonstrations, keep informed through local news and embassy communications, and ensure travel documents are current. The embassy also recommends that travelers sign up for safety alerts via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov and check travel.state.gov/montenegro for destination-specific information.
