The U.S. Embassy in Podgorica has issued a demonstration alert after a violent incident involving Turkish nationals and local Montenegrins over the weekend. The embassy reported that some property damage occurred, including the burning of a Turkish-owned business, but there have been no reports of American citizens being involved.
According to the embassy, there are signs that a protest is planned for 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 28, in front of the Government of Montenegro building near the Hilton Hotel. The embassy also noted that the upcoming Turkish National Day on Wednesday, October 29, may attract more attention and could result in additional gatherings or demonstrations.
The embassy advised U.S. citizens to avoid the area around the Government of Montenegro building and Hilton Hotel during the scheduled protest. Other recommendations include remaining vigilant, avoiding large gatherings or demonstrations where tensions could rise, monitoring local news and embassy communications for updates, refraining from discussing sensitive topics, and ensuring travel documents are current and accessible.
U.S. citizens traveling to or living in Montenegro are encouraged to enroll at step.state.gov to receive safety alerts from the embassy. Additional information about travel to Montenegro can be found at travel.state.gov/montenegro.
