Travel disruptions occurred in Lithuania over the weekend of October 24, 2025, after Lithuanian authorities reported that weather balloons launched from Belarus crossed into Lithuanian airspace. In response to these incidents, Vilnius and Kaunas International Airports were closed for short periods, and land border crossings between Lithuania and Belarus were also temporarily shut down. The closures led to the disruption of several overnight flight arrivals and departures.

The U.S. Embassy in Vilnius issued a security alert regarding these events. The embassy advised travelers to check with their airlines about possible changes to upcoming travel plans and to consult airport websites for updates on closures. The alert also reminded U.S. citizens not to travel to Belarus, in line with the Department of State’s Level 4 travel advisory.

The embassy further recommended confirming updated border restrictions, monitoring local media for new information, reviewing personal security plans, ensuring travel documents are current and accessible, and carrying proper identification such as a U.S. passport with any required visas.

For assistance, the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius provided contact details including telephone numbers and an email address. Travelers were also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates.
